Jaap van Zweden stays on as Principal Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra

On Wednesday 1 April, after the rehearsal with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in the Netherlands Broadcasting Music Centre, Jaap van Zweden signed a new contract. This means a deliberately commitment with the Netherlands Public Broadcasting, of which the Netherlands Broadcasting Music Center is an integral part. Until the end of the 2014-15 concert season Jaap van Zweden will be in charge of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra as its principal conductor for an average of 12 productions per season. Several important tours are also on the agenda.

Jaap van Zweden started as principal conductor and artistic director of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic in 2005. In the past few years he scored many successes, both with symphonic repertoire and with opera and concertante opera. Recent high points included the performance of Wagner’s Lohengrin and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.

Starting in the 2010-2011 season, Jaap van Zweden will focus his attention on the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. An important consideration for him was the repertoire, combining high quality with adventurous programming as it is heard in series such as the Concertgebouw’s Saturday Matinee concert series, with which the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra has carved out a niche all its own in the Dutch orchestra world.

Negotiations for a new principal conductor for the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic are in an advanced stage.

Jaap van Zweden will combine his position as principal conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra with his post as Music Director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. A musician with a growing reputation in the United States, he recently deputized for Riccardo Chailly and Semyon Bychkov as conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and has been invited to conduct the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and the orchestras of Cleveland, Los Angeles and Philadelphia.

Tours
In October 2009 Jaap van Zweden and the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra have scheduled a tour to Singapore. Tours are planned to places such as Birmingham, Japan and the United States in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

CD recordings
Recordings of symphonies no. 8 and 3 by Anton Bruckner are planned for the Exton label in 2009-2010 and 2010-2011. For the QuattroLive label – following Mahler’s Das klagende Lied and Wagner’s Lohengrin – the live registration of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg will soon be produced; it received much acclaim in a performance in the Saturday Matinee concert series on 7 February 2009 by the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Netherlands Radio Choir and vocal soloists, conducted by Jaap van Zweden.
